2022 Conservation Symposium

13 Sep 2022

CapeNature is proud to co-host the 2022 Conservation Symposium and registration is now open for this international hybrid event taking place from Monday, October 31st to Friday, November 4th.

The Conservation Symposium is a platform to facilitate the sharing of ideas and lessons, and for the co-creation of solutions to contemporary conservation issues in Africa. It serves as a bridge between conservation practitioners, scientists, and policymakers to solve real-world problems and integrates a broad range of disciplines in a meaningful way, creating and strengthening connections both within and between disciplines. The Symposium allows for researchers to demonstrate the relevance of their work in addressing real-world conservation problems, and to identify new applied research opportunities and directions. It also provides a platform for training and skills development for conservation science and monitoring.

CapeNature staff are contributing several talks including a focus on the Western Cape State of Conservation Report 2021, the new Western Cape Protected Area Expansion Strategy, Protected Area Management Effectiveness tools and strategies, as well as integrated planning in freshwater ecosystems and CapeNature’s newly developed Species Prioritisation Framework.

The Conservation Symposium 2022 is a hybrid event with a central venue for live streaming pre-recorded and live presentations to multi-hub meetings scattered across the country, the continent, and the globe so that it continues to be affordable and inclusive but also allows for face-to-face networking and a social aspect to be catered for. This has been enabled by collaborative partnership and in-kind contributions from several conservation and academic organisations, institutions, and associations. Thanks to generous financial contributions from CapeNature, Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife, and WildTrust, participation as a virtual delegate is free. In-person attendance at the main event is ZAR1500 and takes place in Scottburgh, KwaZulu-Natal.
