City Nature Challenge

30 Mar 2022

The annual City Nature Challenge is a global community science competition to document different plants and animals. The public is challenged to find and document plants, animals and other organisms within a specific area. (100 points)

As a South African first, the City of Cape Town participated in the 2019 event and won the most species observed out of 159 cities that participated worldwide. For 2022, ten cities in South Africa are taking part in the City Nature Challenge, six of which fall within the Western Cape including Cape Town, Stellenbosch, Overstrand, Southern Overberg, West Coast and Garden Route.

All you need to do is get to a nature area between 29 April and 2 May, take pictures of as many plants and animals as possible and then upload these to the City Nature Challenge database. Your pictures will be identified by specialists, counted, and documented.

To find out about events in the Western Cape email learning@capenature.co.za. Send us a picture of you participating in the challenge and earn 80 points! For more information, please visit https://citynaturechallenge.org/.

Look for spider webs, bugs on leaves, butterflies, ants. Another option is to look at the plants in the garden and figure out which is indigenous (local), and which is not.
