WARNING: Is Getting HOT in here!

21 Jan 2022

Anton Bredell, the Minister of Local Government, Environmental Affairs and Development Planning in the Western Cape, through the Western Cape Disaster Management Centre, today issued a warning on the expected heatwave throughout the Western Cape this weekend.

According to the South African Weather Service, temperatures in the Western Cape will rise above 40 degrees Celsius in some places both Saturday and Sunday.

We urge that you plan accordingly to stay out of the sun and preferably not embark on long outdoor activities or exercise during the heat of the day. Please be aware of the signs of heat exhaustion and heatstroke.

Keep yourself and your loved ones hydrated by drinking plenty of water during heatwaves. Remember that high temperatures also increase the risk of wildfires.

We plead you to be careful with open fires and to not leave them unattended. We are currently at the peak of the Western Cape fire season. "Let us avoid preventable rescue situations through responsible behaviour,” Bredell said.

Please report any sign of fire or smoke immediately. Save lives, biodiversity, and infrastructure. Fires can be reported by dialling 112 from your mobile.

Tips on How to Better Prepare for a Hike:

  • Do not hike alone.
  • Wear comfortable walking shoes, sunscreen and a hat.
  • Carry enough food and water with you.
  • Make sure you know what the weather conditions are before you depart.
  • Remember to sunscreen and wear a hat in extreme heat conditions.
  • Make sure you have a relevant map of the area.
  • Take a field medical kit with you for emergencies.
  • Obey all signage.
  • Stay in a group and on the trails.
