World Fisheries Day

13 Oct 2022

On the 21st of November we celebrate World Fisheries Day to highlight the importance of healthy ocean ecosystems and the importance of ensuring sustainable stocks of fisheries.

People eat over 100 million tons of fish every year and more than 25% of the world’s dietary protein is provided by fish. But sadly, more than two-thirds of the world's fisheries have been overfished and more than one third are becoming less every day. Without a doubt the world’s fisheries are in trouble.

How do we look after our fisheries? You should always make sure that you have the right fishing license or permissions to fish and when you do fish, stick to the right catch sizes and other rules. Avoid eating fish that is threatened or in danger of becoming extinct (see the article on SASSI earlier in this newsletter). Lastly, you can generally lead a life that produces less waste, which will lead to less litter and other waste ending up in our fisheries.

Energy Is Important!

Imagine you have a super cool toy that everyone loves to play with, but there’s only one of it, and it’s starting to get a little worn out. You can’t just play with it forever—eventually, it’ll run out of power, and you’ll need to wait for a new one, right? Well, that’s kind of like energy!
