International Day of Biological Diversity
The International Day for Biological Diversity is celebrated on 22 May every year.
The month of May is considered Biodiversity Month and to celebrate International Day for Biological Diversity, which was established in 2000 by the United Nations General Assembly. It is observed annually on May 22, a day that commemorates the adoption of the Convention on Biological Diversity in 1992.
International Day for Biological Diversity is celebrated to raise awareness about biological diversity and the issues surrounding it. This day aims to highlight effective strategies that can help protect biodiversity.
This year, CapeNature will be part of a competition that is open to learners who want to make a difference. We are looking for solutions to the threats facing our unique biodiversity. Enter as an individual or a pair and win incredible prizes. To find out more email learning@capenature.co.za.

Biodiversity Crime Awareness
In July, CapeNature hosts its biodiversity crime campaign in an attempt to educate the public on what can be done to protect our plants and animals from criminals
Biodiversity Crime involves the illegal collection, consumption, sale or exploitation of wild animals and plants. It destroys our natural resources, habitats and biodiversity; compromises our natural heritage and contributes to general criminal activity and all its negative social consequences.

There are several environmental awareness events over the next few months. Make sure to put them in your diary. Environmental calendar days are special days, like a birthday, where we celebrate important environmental themes.
Individual Action Projects
By bringing nature into your home, you will connect with nature more often. Use your imagination to do this, send us a picture and explanation of what you have done and earn 100 points. Here are some ideas. Add a new plant to a space in your home. Decorate something in your room with something natural (stones/sand/natural picture). Move your furniture
Group Action Projects
A backyard hunt. For this activity you need to visit a natural space. It can be your school, local park or even a garden. The idea is to hunt for insects or any sign of them. Look for spider webs, bugs on leaves, butterflies, ants. Another option is to look at the plants in the garden and figure out which is indigenous (local), and which is not. Send us a few pictures of your bug or plant hunt and you will earn your group 100 points!

We simply cannot survive without nature; it gives us everything from food to materials to water. Nature also improves our health and enriches our lives. Being in nature can have a calming effect on us and even improve our mood.
