Report on individual baboons
The Cape Peninsula Baboon Management Joint Task Team (CPBMJTT) consisting of representatives from SANParks, CapeNature, and the City of Cape Town, wants to report on baboons Quinton and CON18. Read more below:
The CPBMJTT has received inquiries regarding the whereabouts of an alpha male baboon from the CT2 troop referred to as Quinton by residents and wants to inform residents that the CPBMJTT carries no knowledge of the whereabouts of this baboon.
The CPBMJTT uses this opportunity to inform residents that a male baboon (CON18 - Lips) has been euthanised following deliberation by the Cape Peninsula Baboon Management Joint Task Team (CPBMJTT). This intervention is in line with the approved and adopted set of baboon management guidelines.
The CPBMJTT accepts that not all residents or stakeholders will be in support of such decisions. However, the CPBMJTT is confident that these decisions, although difficult, are robust, rational and based on the best available information and scientific advice. The task team is guided by the baboon management guidelines (BTTG03 guidelines) and will implement these as and when needed. Euthanasia is one of several tools in the baboon management toolkit that is included in the Baboon Strategic Management Plan which was recently presented at the public engagements.
