The Draft Strategy sets out the strategic approach for expanding protected areas in the Province of the Western Cape. The main purposes of the Draft Strategy are to efficiently expand the Western Cape Protected Area Estate through state and private land investment and ensure that protected area values and ecological integrity are protected through effective management and administration.

Section 39(2) of the Act requires CapeNature to prepare a Draft Strategy and submit it to the Provincial Minister for adoption. Before adopting the Draft Strategy, a consultative process in accordance with section 39(3) and (4) of the Act must be followed.
